To understand the purpose and design of idents.
This clip i have found on youtube shows us from the start when BBC created their first ident and you see how it changes frequently as the years go by.
Underneath you can see a timeline which ive used photo's instead so it shows how effective it is and how they have changed a lo since the first one in black and white it was only in 1969 when they had their first ident in colour.
Questions
How is the brand identifiable over the years?
The BBC's ident has been similar since it first started as they either you props for a circle or use the world which identifys the ident as something they permantly have used. They also use the channels name BBC in every one so the audience can notify the programme for the ident.
Has anything remained the same? What has evolved?
When the ident was first created in 1953 till 1968 they were in black and white and were very similar to each other but then in 1969 they introduced colour to the channela dn the ident was then more bright but very plain.
Try to find the channels remit- what is its promise to the viewers?
The BBC's remit is- Representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities.
How has the ident been packaged and unpackaged over the years?
The ident has changed by what is going on in the ident, the setting and the storylines. The thing which they have managed to keep in the ident over the years is that they always have a circle or circular movement.
When does the ident play?
the idents usually are played inbetween every programme as BBC1 does not have adverts in between programmes.
How often is it visible during three hours viewing time?
if each programme was to last an hour then the ident would only be played 3 times in a three hour period.
How many idents does the channel currently use?
the channel at the moment uses around about three different idents, one with dogs, one with hippos and one with bikes used all to create a circular motion.
Is there a theme across the idents? what stays the same?
There is a theme across all of the recent ident BBC1 is using and that is that there are a lot of circular motions used and they are all usually red. the thing which has stayed the same is that circular motion.
This is an ident on channel E4 and i would personally say that the ident is really good reasons being is basically they have their own colour which will always be in their idents guarented which is purple. They prove that they can use a creative effect combining the colour and use in a bedroom with animation, this ident for me is really good.
This ident i think is really good i mean it is very different from many ones BBC1 have created but they also connected the circle they use in all of theirs as it provides that whenever you are watching BBC1 they will always use an ident which will lead into a circle. This ident is very good and the fact that they have decided to use mamals to focus on their ident is somehting very different from other channels and you would rarely see it.
This is an ITV2 Ident which i would personally looks really different i have never seen one like this because its more of a creative idea usig peoples legs and like moving and dancing and they have also stuck to the colour the ident represents which is green as the actors have green clothing and bright colours so they stand out.
This ident is another one of e4 and although i love most of the e4 idents i would say this ident is at a lower standard then the usual ones only because i dont think there is much to it, its wuite boring and not active or creative as the usual ones like the lack of use of effects or animation use. I wouldnt say its totally boring and dull because there is colour buti reckon it could be a lot better if it was worked on.
This ident i have found was dated back in to the 70s on which you can obviously technology was a bit of a problem back then as this ident shows lack of colour. The ones above are up to date showing that this one isnt, it is not really entertaining because it doesnt do much except the world moves but i suppose that maueb it was good back then when it was first publicly shown.
This ident above is one of itv2 only the one is previously spoke about i thought was entertaining and very different only this one isnt really doing it for me as its to plain and simple the camera just moves into and swimming pool and the itv2 logo is feautured but it isnt really something that catches your eye. They do not have any camera shots neither apart from it being above the water and moving.
Comparing Idents!
The idnets above are the two i have chose to do a comparison on as i think they both are interesting to use.
The first ident is one of the BBC's which is one of the many idents that are very different as they have chosen to use people kite flying which they would of used actors or volunteers to star in to be supportive for the channel. You can see that kites are connected with the channels colour red as the kites are representing the bright colour so it does not contradict the audience. The setting of the ident is somewhere in the country i would say as they are just on heels and the atmosphere is peaceful like. I would personnally say the ident does have good standard as the BBC do follow on the idents with the use of people involved unlike many idents. The ident is really good as they have the kites representing the circle that is always shown in all the idents the BBC have created it shows good variety how they can use many things to connect to the BBC by showing the cirlce/world.
The next ident i am using to compare with is a E4 ident on which i think is really good, E4 use many different idents even using ones that the audience have created which i think gives great oppurtunity. They focus on more anmation and more different creative effects to many other channels but they still connect to their own colour which is purple and you will always find and the idents representing that colour for the E4 association. The setting for this ident clip is in the a front/living room which has just been recreated with use of colour animation, photo animation, trick shots, edits and many more they have good use of many different things and many things to look at so givesyou the oppurtunity to look at more things then one so its more like a variety of different things.
